Youth Resource Centre
The YES Project is dreaming big! In the next few years our goal is to have our very own youth resource centre in Penticton. Our youth resource centre will be youth-driven and inspired. In addition to providing youth support via resources and counselling, the centre will be a fully operationally youth emergency shelter. The centre will also offer space dedicated to recreation, performance, and activities.
Our youth deserve and are in critical need of a youth resource centre. If you are interested in joining the youth resource centre committee or are interested in helping us reach our youth resource centre goal please email email@example.com or call 250-493-9311.
Wondering about the need in the community for a youth resource centre?
99% of the youth that were interviewed during data collection for the 2013 Youth Esteem Strategy stated a clear need for a dedicated youth resource centre in Penticton. Young people spoke about the need for a space that could offer a range of programs and activities during evenings and weekends, throughout the winter, spring, summer and fall. For example, a youth centre could offer things like a dedicated youth-only performance space, a kitchen and diner where young people can learn to cook or participate in cooking competitions such as “Top Chef Penticton”, a free store (to trade or swap stuff), youth support programs (such as safe sex resources and employment counselling), sports lessons, gaming room, and a bicycle repair shop. The youth resource centre could also house emergency beds for young people who don’t have anywhere to go and need a place to sleep for the night until they get connected to appropriate resources .
